How To Not Be Boring On The Internet

What we can learn from the old personal blogging days.

Remember the good ol’ days when everyone had blogs?!

I would log in to my Bloglovin’ every morning while I was making my coffee and catch up on everyone I followed. I subscribed to bloggers that covered a whole host of subjects like DIY house and crafts, books, motivational, photography, cooking, and some who had totally personal blogs, documenting their everyday life and what they were up to. It was fantastic. A real glory moment of creativity on the internet, IMO!

Because there was so much potential there, but no one totally yet knew where it would lead them… creators were just following what they were interested in at the moment, and things grew organically. We saw this play out over the years to come.

Some bloggers grew into teaching, speaking, and writing books. Some became full-time influencers and their blog became their business through sponsorships, ads, and collaborations. Some branched out into online courses and figured out how to make that their business. Some launched magazines and product lines. And some used their blog to promote their etsy stores and other projects. They kind of all grew into more, or the blog retired altogether, the author moving away from the project entirely.

And then blogging morphed into the influencer and online business era, where everything started to feel more curated and branded. (And in my personal opinion, quite a bit MORE BORING?!?!)

It’s like everyone moved away from their blog (their personal platform) and onto Instagram (a curated platform run by an algorithm) and that changed the whole game.

And I don’t know about you, but I miss the old days (yes, I’m aware I’m aging myself hahaha) where people were creating and putting their thoughts and purpose and work out there on their own platforms, on their own terms, and having FUN with it. Seeing where it all would lead to…

I do think we’re coming upon a bit of a personal blogging revolution. So many of the creators I follow have posted recently about getting sick of trying to please an algorithm, and wanting to just create like they used to. To not have everything they’re working on be for the sole purpose of trying to get people into their courses or programs. To move out of the self-imposed box of having a “niche” and back into having a GENERAL OVERALL MESSAGE about what they believe in, and how their work relates to that.

I PERSONALLY LOVE THIS. Bring back peeks into life - what you’re watching, reading and eating, the music that’s moving you, what you believe in and your philosophy on life, what you’re spending your time doing, what you love about where you live and the adventures you’re having. Let life and creativity inspire you!

It doesn’t always have to be about the bottom line, and you don’t always have to know where everything you’re interested in is going to lead you before you even begin.

And so, if you are someone who has an idea, or who wants to create, but you keep tripping yourself up over things like…

What’s my niche?

How would this relate to my niche?

How is this going to become my business?

How do I beat the algorithm?

How do I get taken seriously as a super serious brand with this project?

I invite you to reflect on the creators that you love to follow, and why you follow them. To think about the internet that you love, and the internet you want to see. To notice what feels stale to you on Instagram, (or wherever you tend to hang out). To think about the online business world, influencer world, creator world - what feels fun and juicy and inspiring to you, and what falls flat.

And then see how you can relate that to your own desires for creation and magic.

And then… get to it, baby.
