It’s Time To Flip The Script On Social Media

Let me explain…

If you’re someone who creates content on social media in any capacity - and perhaps especially if you use it as a tool for your biz - I’m sure I do not need to explain that it can be incredibly frustrating, and lately, even more so.

In the past few months, almost every biz creator I follow has talked about engagement being at a record low for them, and I’ve seen a lot of amazing creators back off almost completely from posting. (I’m talking about mostly IG here, but I’ve seen it across the board.)

There’s been a distinct turn in the tide in this last month in particular, as I’ve started to notice that all of the ads I’m getting fed on IG now are for online courses, programs, and masterminds teaching on how to “beat the algorithm” and get your reels mega views.

Like, is there anything more meta than that?! (Pun not intended, but appropriate 😂)

A social media app has made it so complicated for a creator to get views and engagement from their own audience they’ve worked hard to build, that now the thing that the app is pushing you to buy are programs where people need to pay to learn how to get said views. And then when the algorithm (inevitably) changes again, the info they’ve just paid for might become obsolete anyways.

A creator I follow on YouTube recently posted a video about IG, sharing the stat that IG shows your content to 20% of your audience on average. So 80% of the people who chose to follow you are not seeing your content. That’s absurd imo!

I understand that growing is important, and to do that, your content needs to be shown to people outside of your current audience, but if you’re not getting views or likes from the audience who already likes what you have to offer, and wants to see what you’re up to (and potentially book/buy from you) it’s easy to get discouraged and wonder what the hell the point of posting is anyways.

Before we all collectively throw in the towel, I’m here today to offer us another option:

If you love your work, your creations, your art, hell even your day to day life AND you love sharing it online…

What if we decide to throw out looking to the algorithms’ metric system of what is “good” content, and we instead focus on creating the internet world we want to live in.

On content we are proud to have created and shared, that is GOOD and gets better and better as we tweak, refine, and master our craft.

Content that showcases who we are, what we believe in, and shares the value we have to give.

What if we focus on creating our legacy, piece by piece, post by post, so that it lasts for years to come, for whomever comes across it at the exact right time.

What if we make creating and posting… FUN AGAIN???!!!

Create and share because we love it? Because we love to let others in to our world and we KNOW we have so much love and powerful work to put out there.

And what if we remind ourselves that everything is cyclical and always changing.

Your content might be on fire one day and then poof, the algorithm changes and you’re left scratching your head and screaming WHYYYYY to the heavens when you only get 10 views on your reel.

Your business might be booming one year and then soften the next.

It doesn’t always mean we should give up, especially if this is something that you love and is important to your expression in the world.

Sometimes it means we simply need to flip the script away from the metrics and back to our why. And try new things, experiment, and continue to create more of what we wish existed.

Love you 😘
